Welcome to the Fantastic Fireflies Preschool Room!

FOR CHILDREN 4 – 5 YEARS OLD

The Firefly Room offers a wide range of creative activities for 4 and 5 year-old children to help enhance social skills, problem solving skills, cognitive development, creativity, motor skills and independence. Through both teacher-directed and self-guided activities, a child’s natural method of learning, which is play, is emphasized.

Understanding Your Child’s Development:

Preschoolers are enthusiastic learners who are inquisitive and curious, always wanting to know “why?”  They are also focused as learners, working to master the initiative stage of development. Preschool-aged children begin asserting control and power over the environment by taking initiative to plan activities, accomplish tasks and face challenges. During this stage, our teachers know how important it is to encourage exploration and to help children make appropriate choices. Teachers provide clear expectations, predictable routines and patient interactions with children to support their development.

Growing and Learning in the Firefly Room:

Each area of our classroom is organized into learning centers. Children are able to move from center to center, learning through play and repetition at their own pace. In addition to our center discovery choice time, we offer structured learning experiences. All the activities encourage the development of each child in their individual stages of growth. The centers are available to the children on a daily basis include: math, science, blocks, dramatic play, computer, writing, listening, music, art, and sensory. In each of our lesson plans, we incorporate fun ways to learn letters, shapes, numbers and everyday skills. Group time is one of the children’s favorite activities. The children choose jobs they complete weekly that help maintain the classroom. We read books, have wonderful discussions, play games, sing songs and complete flannel stories. We offer both large and small group activities which include social studies, math, science experiments, stories, daily music, nature, letters, shapes, printing, phonics, the five senses and safety. Fireflies-41

The social skills that we work on include playing cooperatively with others, making friends, following directions, utilizing words to solve conflict, using table manners and respecting the property of others. We work on problem solving skills by using toys and equipment such as puzzles, and letter and number concept games like memory. Creative expression is encouraged through a wide range of art activities including process and product art, dramatic play, problem solving activities, music, building with blocks and other manipulatives, puppet play, and story telling.

It is our hope that every child graduates from FCDC with the skills and self-confidence  needed to be successful in Kindergarten and beyond!
